Creating a new publishing platform
Elsevier is a worldleading scientific publisher. Its flagship products include scientific journals such as The Lancet and Cell. Between 2014 and 2021, I have been working on and off several assignments.
Elsevier asked me for creative direction and UX strategy of a self-initiated concept on innovative scientific publishing with a paper centric and data driven approach. The manuscript files submitted by the author for possible publication are automatically transformed into a online draft article. During the submission cycle of submitting, reviewing and revision, the paper gets enriched with more data-structured content and evolves into a final publication. In my role as creative director, I did set the strategy, vision and design criteria. As the only designer in this pilot, I also created a user experience with tangible designs that we weekly discussed and tested with users.
Launching a new journal
Star Protocols, an imprint of the reputable scientific publisher Cell Press, asked me to work on the launch of the journal. I designed marketing, journal, article and search/ filter pages. Work also included future concepts and strategies.
Setting up a privacy center
Elsevier asked me to set up a privacy center where users could manage privacy settings of products they use in the Elsevier product portfolio. To ensure privacy by design, I introduced an internal tool for products to manage privacy options according Elsevier privacy principles.
Create an OKR Tool
Elsevier asked me to design an OKR tool where teams could set and manage their business goals. Work included everything UX and design related: from research to concept, through visual design to last bits of execution. Tool got adopted by LexisNexis, part of RELX as the parent organization of both Elsevier and Lexis Nexis.
UX Lead & Strategist
Redesign authentication system
Elsevier asked me to work on the user experience of a new authentication system. Owned all aspects of design. Main focus on brand positioning, information architecture and research.
Concepts and prototypes of a research operating platform
Mendeley asked me to help them with design strategy and concept design. In collaboration with one of the co-founders of Mendeley, I created concepts and prototypes that showed how Mendeley as a research management and collaboration tool could enable the Elsevier platform for further expansion; giving researchers access to more content.
